Interior Structure of Titan

چکیده
Introduction: Cassini radio science data indicates that Titan is nearly in hydrostatic equilibrium [1]. We have used thermal models [2] and hydrostatic equilibrium theory [3] to derive interior models of Titan. We show as the measurement of the principal quadrupole gravitational coefficient C22 from the Radio Doppler data from Cassini spacecraft will improve our knowledge of the interior structure of Titan. Moment of inertia: The axial moment of inertia (C) gives us an indication of the degree of the interior differentiation of Titan. For an undifferentiated interior structure

Rotational dynamics and internal structure of Titan
Estimates of the moments of inertia of Titan, as separately deduced from its gravitational field and spin pole orientation, are quite different. This discrepancy can be resolved if Titan is either not precessing as a rigid body (e.g. if the shell is decoupled from the interior by an ocean), or if the spin pole is not fully damped (e.g. due to atmospheric excitation). By the end of the Cassini m...

[1] Interior models of a differentiated Titan with an internal ammonia-water ocean and chondritic radiogenic heat production in an undifferentiated rock + iron core have been calculated. We assume thermal and mechanical equilibrium and calculate the structure of the interior as a function of the thickness of an ice I layer on top of the ocean as well as the moment of inertia factor and the tida...

We analyze observations of Titan’s south polar lake Ontario Lacus obtained by Cassini ’s Visual and Infrared Mapping Spectrometer during the 38th flyby of Titan (T38; 2007 December 5). The near-closest-approach observations have the highest signal-to-noise, the finest spatial resolution, and the least atmospheric influence of any near-infrared lake observation to date. We use the large, spatial...

[1] We have developed a thermal model of Titan’s interior to study changes in volume during partial freezing or melting of a subsurface ocean due to heat flux variations from the interior. We find that the long‐term cooling of Titan can cause global volume contraction DV/V ∼0.01. We then simulate two‐dimensional contractional deformation of Titan’s icy lithosphere, finding that contractional de...
